輪廓~ Joy Division(中)

Joy Division 一個僅發行過2張專輯成軍三年資歷的搖滾樂團，而他們卻是英倫搖滾史上最傳奇的樂團之一。

團名原為 Warsaw 的 Joy Division 成立於1976年的曼徹斯特。
樂團成員包括主唱 Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar)，吉他手Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards)，貝斯手 Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals)和鼓手 Stephen Morris (drums and percussion)。




Bernard, Peter 和 Ian 相識於76年的一場Sex Pistols 的演唱會上，那時候的 Bernard 和 Peter 正好想幫自己的樂團尋找一名主唱，和 Ian 相談甚歡下決定邀請他擔任樂團主唱。次年，Ian Curtis 舊識Stephen 加入了樂團後，Joy Division 於是開始展開屬於他們的音樂歷程。

樂團成立之初的運作並非如想像中那麼順利，一開始他們在音樂上的創作並沒有什麼想法。不過經過幾次的摸索,他們也漸漸地找到了自己的一套創作模式。

基本上他們在樂曲方面的創作是由 Peter 彈奏的bass為主線，引導了整首歌曲的基本架構，有了基本節奏後再由 Bernard 的吉他適時加入一些韻律，接著以 Stephen 濃重的鼓擊將這些音樂元素加以串聯，歌曲的音樂創作因此成型。
當歌曲完成後，再交由對文字掌握能力相當不錯的Ian 負責歌詞方面的創作。

Joy Division 最初的音樂風格雖然也受了 Punk Rock 的影響，但是他們的音樂卻少了Punk Rock 的激情吵雜。相反的，在他們的作品裡常常呈現出一種極為冷靜的低調。
因為他們的出現，讓原本充斥著龐克音樂的樂壇帶來新的氣象，而麻痺一段時日的音樂圈帶也因此獲得了新的解藥。
他們開創了70年代末的一種新音樂思維，也帶動了Post Punk (後龐克運動)的崛起。




1978年1月，樂團第一次以 Joy Division 為團名登台演出 。
經過了一整年的現場表演與數首單曲的發行，Ian Curtise 於1979年初登上了NME封面。而 Joy Division 也獲邀至 BBC 的Radio 1 錄製了 John Peel Sessions 。(P.S. John Peel 乃英國之著名DJ教父，一生致力於推廣各式前衛音樂為職志，而由於他的專業推薦也間接奠定許多地下及獨立樂團日後在音樂上的成功。)



The Peel Session EP 也是我重要的收藏之一。

1979年四月，Joy Division 終於發行了屬於他們的第一張專輯，而這張"Unknown Pleasures"也是搖滾史上最重要的專輯之一。
這張專輯取代了龐克音樂的粗糙，也正式宣告後龐克樂風的到來(Post Punk)。
"Unknown Pleasures"呈現出一種極度冷靜的低調，加上 Ian Curtis 的聲線時而疏離空虛，時而帶著濃重感性的嗓音，雖然節奏仍舊延續著龐克的基本步調，但是大量的合成器及後製音效的運用，讓他們擺脫了龐克樂的快速粗糙，進而取得一種新的音樂模式。

而由 Peter Saville 設計的唱片封套也是唱片史上最著名的封面之一。

Ian Cutris 的寫作能力造就了"Unknown Pleasures" 在歌詞上的優異表現。
他是搖滾樂史上第一個毫不保留地唱出了自身的痛苦，和無可救藥的絕望。聽者們可以從歌詞的字裡行間感受到Ian 沉溺在自我內心世界的痛苦情緒，而那幾乎能把所有人都拉進他生命中黑暗的深淵，或者這也讓許多聽者們感受到自身痛苦的共鳴。
但是離開舞台之後的 Ian ，並非大家刻板印象中那麼的憂鬱灰暗。事實上，他和所有的20歲年輕人一樣地會和同伴一起打鬧開玩笑，而且他也十分關心朋友時常給與大家溫暖的人。除此之外，他是一個隨時會將新的想法紀錄至筆記本的獨立思想家。
基本上父親在警界工作的他其實是一個蠻正常的年輕人。

雖然"Unknown Pleasures"發行後，傳媒評論一面倒的給予這張專輯極高的評價,但是因為"Factory Records"剛好遇上財務方面的問題，所以無法盡全力的幫Joy Division宣傳，當然也間接的影響了"Unknown Pleasures" 的銷售成績。
不過公司卻幫樂團辦了一場非常出色的演唱會，不論是觀眾的人數和樂團的表現都是屬於一流的狀態。

John Peel, was an English disc jockey, radio presenter and journalist.

Known for his eclectic taste in music and his honest and warm broadcasting style, John Peel was a popular and respected DJ and broadcaster. He was one of the first to play American psychedelic rock, reggae and punk on British radio, and his significant promotion of performers ranging from alternative rock, pop, death metal, British hip hop and dance music is widely acknowledged.

He was the longest-serving of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004.
